Burger King ad to activate Google Home devices backfires
Burger King’s latest advert for its signature sandwich has been sabotaged by Wikipedia users claiming the Whopper contains cyanide and is “the worst hamburger product”.
The fast food chain’s TV commercial starts with an employee holding the burger saying: “You’re watching a 15-second Burger King ad, which is unfortunately not enough time to explain all the fresh ingredients in the Whopper sandwich.
“But I’ve got an idea.
“OK, Google, what is the Whopper burger?”
The question activates any voice-controlled Google Home assistant or Android phone search, triggering the device to search for “Whopper” on Google and read out the entry from Wikipedia.
A Burger King spokesman said the chain “saw an opportunity to do something exciting with the emerging technology of intelligent personal assistant devices”.
But Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, meaning the burger’s ingredients were reportedly listed as “rat meat” and “toenail clippings” at one point after the ad campaign began.
Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International, said the commercial was not designed in conjunction with Google.
Reports suggest Google Home stopped responding to the commercial shortly after the ad became available on YouTube on Wednesday.
